Bristol-based Adam Hancher is an illustrator who has caught my attention with a portfolio that gets the application of mood, colour, tone, texture and miniature detail just right. Adam begins his work very roughly, saying that his sketchbooks are often very messy, with much work that remains unfinished. Adam has always been a fan of folk art, and so his work takes a lot from the naive painting quite often associated with it.
‘I am also interested in print, and so some of my digital work imitates print processes such as screen printing and relief printing. I think that through these print processes the work gains character that may not always be present in slick vectorized imagery‘.
Adam describes how he achieves these effects through his work process:
‘I’ll create a lot of samples using ink, paint, pencil, found materials etc, and then store these digitally to use again. I compose my final pieces using Photoshop, working to rough drawings. I layer the scanned textures over the top of each other, constantly adjusting contrast, colour, tonal levels and so on until I create the look and mood I am aiming for. My most important digital tools are probably my graphics tablet and scanner. I have a love hate relationship with my scanner‘.

Currently Adam is working on an animation with fellow Bristol illustrator Jack Hudson. It appears that a great deal of contemporary illustrators are now incorporating animation work into their schedules whether for fun, expand their horizons and portfolios or as part of a client brief.
‘Although we’re using very familiar techniques to create the imagery, using After Effects to animate is very new to me, and quite frustrating! We will be posting updates and stills on our blogs as the whole thing comes together. I also have a few gallery spaces to plan for in the near future, so I’m beginning a lot of new work. Hopefully it will be quite pleasantly different from work I have produced before‘.
