Michael Velliquette‘s works of art are probably best described as gargantuan, wall-mounted paper sculptures. They are incredibly decorative, intense objects which must have taken a long time to create, as well as a lot of patience.
The work seen here, ranging from last year to the present, could be the elaborate religious art of a forgotten culture or the deities themselves. It’s the sheer quantity of colours, layers, and minuscule details that makes them so strong, even from the simplest of materials, coloured paper.
Looking at the art he creates, it’s impossible to imagine where he finds the time to fit in the frequent teaching he does. Although he regularly returns to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, you can also find him in universities and colleges elsewhere in North America.
Paper chains will never be the same for me again.
