The work of Michael Dotson may seem computer generated; however, they are in fact large-scale acrylic paintings, often 40-60″ wide. His referencing of 80s and early 90s colours and patterns helps him to create loud, exciting paintings, which immediately grab your attention.

I was interested to see how he managed to created such specifically aligned designs, so was happy to find that he had posted a time-lapse video of one of his paintings in progress in the news section of his site. You can see in the video that he uses tape to mask off areas and build up the layers, which is why a quick-drying paint like acrylic would be perfect.

However this Washington-based painter does it, I’m glad he does and hope he keeps on doing it!

That is pretty mean, but I can see how this style will divide people, and I think that is a good thing. It’s usually the stuff that people react negatively to are the game-changers, especially in contemporary art and culture.

I think it’s always a good to support a negative comment with something constructive. However, you’re entitled to your opinion so thank you for the feedback :)

I still think these are fantastic— I love his 80s referencing!
