Polly Becker gathers together what others might discard because of their broken joints, chipping paint or worn sheen. She arranges them into what she calls assemblages, basically using them as her tools to create he quirky and intriguing illustrations. “One man’s treasure …”, after all.

It’s a great skill to have at a time when waste is everywhere. Using scrap materials to make totally new, beautiful objects, full of appeal is a reminder that not everything needs to be thrown out, and it is often the imperfections, chips and scrapes, that give them their character. It is the character of the objects that Polly puts to good use, too. With many of the pieces being familiar, she uses our already established perception of them to her advantage.
