Paul X Johnson Velvety Painted Illustration

There’s a calming sort of silence that comes across in Paul X Johnson‘s work. It possible starts in the introspective gazes of his characters and ends somewhere in the large block of velvety texture.

What really works for me is his balance of his obvious painterly skill with a design sentiment. Objects are highlighted, exaggerated and aligned nicely. Shading is flattened out so that the forms are clear and pushed to points where they become patterns or stand alone, iconic statements. A really nice mixture of ideas and original style.
