Artists’ ongoing side projects are always very interesting. They’re a place you can really see them playing around, investigating themes and focusing on something they love, away from commissions. Eirian Chapman’s blog, ‘Teeth and Hair‘ is all of the above. It’s also extremely original, in style, imagery, and theme. The theme is ‘combs’.

For most of you, combs may not be the first subject to spring to mind for a design blog, but Eirian’s interest in hair ornaments that also includes pins and sticks, makes a great theme. It’s really a way for her to explore decorative forms, and some of them are truly decorative and beautiful.

We like the ornamental design in all the pieces, but also the compacted themes in each. In clever little flashes of design, Eirian makes witty comments and comical asides. We recommend taking a look through the whole series.

“I am a freelance illustrator and graphic designer based in Melbourne, Australia. My work is almost purely digital, in that the finished product is always done on the computer, but I hand sketch and paint textures which end up in the final artwork.”

“I have always done everything by hand but since studying graphic design and working in the industry my work has evolved and relies on the computer quite heavily in order to achieve the sometimes fast turnaround required. I guess being a graphic designer makes my illustration work quite geometric and colour focused in its approach. Im kinda really obsessed with colour right now!”
