In splatters and dashes, Jennifer Marvillas‘ mixed media pieces capture the vibrancy and spectacle of the bustling, modern metropolis. As someone who says “her drawings are her reason for traveling and her travels are her reason for drawing”, it’s no surprise she can emulate the feeling of wonder a new and foreign city can inspire.
We like the unrestricted intensity in her work. That’s how some places can feel, especially when their buildings are so towering and densely packed, and their lights so neon.
Colours and layers upon layers of sketches and stencils pack her architectural illustrations as well as her maps and topographically-inspired drawings.
My process begins at experience: reading, walking, transiting, seeing, living in which ever city I’m residing— currently Brooklyn. An idea will sometimes percolate for years in my sketchbooks.
In this writing, thoughts morph and are combined with others. Connecting an idea to the media that will best convey the concept is central to my process as I prefer for every piece to feel like an experiment— a new process during which I can learn.
These repetitive and meditative motions connect my love for exploring to my art.
