Dr. Invention is Pamplona-based artist, Jesús Sotés Vicente. His work is made up of strong, elegant shapes constructing stylish characters. He also has a penchant for lovely, rich masses of foliage, which pack many of his images.
It’s interesting to hear about Jesús’ process and what he uses to achieve the different elements. As he goes on to explain, after sketching the idea, the basic forms are created using vectors. This is how he is able to create the really clean lines and simples shapes. To give it the ‘Dr. Invention’ look, he then moves into Photoshop, where the grittiness and tactility is incorporated.
I have been working as a illustrator and graphic designer for a long time.
My illustrations are digital although, at first, I almost always do a pencil sketch for all of them. Later, I draw them in a vector program and add textures in Photoshop.
Often, during the process, I leave myself to be guided by my intuition. This means that many times I don’t know the definitive tone of my work until it is almost finished.
