Eric Comstock’s Joyful Colour and Smiling, Decorated Characters

December 15, 2013 |

Author: Philip Dennis

Pure joy pours out of the beaming faces in Austin, Texas-based artist Eric Comstock’s work. Colour, pattern and fun characters are common sights, as is the interesting combination of mixed media, collage and digital design.

The balance of more rigid geometric shapes with the almost doodle-like drawings makes for a light-hearted yet carefully constructed style. On one hand, you have the sketchy, decorative marks that keep it free and constantly moving, while you also have the stricter forms to keep them all contained in place on the other.

Although Eric took an illustration class at university with encouragement to go further, he actually followed his other interest of advertising. After 11 years in the business he  decided to make the change and pursue illustration— lucky for us he did! He tells us about the passion he has for art that eventually drew him back.

I live in Austin, TX where my wife and I work together and raise our 4 kids and one dog. I love creating work that is full of quirky characters with great expression.

I probably think about color as much as I think about content or concept. It’s all important to me. And I know I’m on to something good if I’m smiling while I work.
