Berlin-based Israeli illustrator, Noa Snir has a penchant for figure-based scenes bustling with life. Her work often hosts a variety of quirky, curios characters, all fumbling around with their own strange goings on.
They’re places you’ll find anthropomorphic heads and all sorts of other fun things to explore.
Below, Noa tells us more about herself as well as her process. As she goes on to talk about, switching between her work on the computer and making things with a pencil or brush in her hand is something she is always considering.
We like the kind of quality that her hand painted illustrations have but it’s also nice that her distinct character designs aren’t lost when moving into digital techniques.
My name is Noa Snir. I was born and raised in Jerusalem, Israel where I studied visual communication. These days, I live and work in Berlin, Germany. For the last two years (since I graduated), I’ve been focusing mainly on editorial work, with the occasional book or poster work.
I like working with a rich color palette, and enjoy handmade work more than working with the computer (I work primarily with acrylic paint). Although I must admit I am slowly becoming friends with my Wacom.
I like getting inspired by traditional art and craft, and am interested in artworks created by people who did not necessarily consider themselves ‘artists’.
My graduation project in art school was an illustrated edition of the Arabian Nights tales. This summer, I returned to this project and elaborated on it, as I was invited to showcase a solo exhibition in Portugal.
It was great fun to return to subject matter which I love, and to create freely for an art gallery, leaving out the more commercial aspects of illustration.
