Back in 2013, we featured Benoit Tardif’s work after being drawn in by its balance of simplicity with grittiness and energy. Eager to see more, we thought we would check out some his recent additions to his portfolio and see how his work has been developing.
Benoit’s work still packs as striking a punch as ever, and in his uniquely characterised way. While now seeming to enjoy more detailed, descriptive layouts, he’s still able to maintain the clarity his work has by sticking to pared down palettes and simple forms.
But while some of his earlier work saw the focused pull right in on his characters, the lens appears to be zooming out now to give us a greater view of his creative scenes. We’re enjoying this new perspective and all the colourful details he’s showing us.
Below, Benoit reminds us about himself and talks through some of the materials he uses.
I am a freelance illustrator, I live Montreal with my wife and son. I like to draw simple, colourful and efficient illustrations.
I use a 0.7 mm ink pen and a sharpie marker. My technique is inspired by screen printing, I like to work with a limited color palette (2, 3 or 4 colors). I draw every layer of color in black, then I scan, import it into Photoshop and add color. It gives little imperfections and a color shift that I love.
