Drawing from her experiences as a designer, and her skills as an illustrator and animator, Simone Noronha creates work that is delicate and evocative, yet manages to be simultaneously graphically striking.
Simone takes techniques from her moving image work and brings them into her illustrations, creating a style that is modern and makes use of interesting digital effects. But her sense for atmosphere and cinematics gives them an emotional quality too.
Simone tells us about herself and how balancing work in a design studio and her personal projects affects the images she creates.
I’m an illustrator, designer and animator living and working in New York city. I work at a design studio during the day, and dive into illustration at night.
Most of my work is done digitally in either Illustrator, Photoshop or Aftereffects.
I enjoy experimenting and trying new techniques and styles. Working at design studios is pretty perfect as I get to take on different clients and their voices.
Lately, I’ve been trying to channel that into building bigger personal projects. It’s been helpful in fully exploring a style and building a body of work that clients can reference.
I read Dingding’s feature on how her horoscope influences her work. It totally makes sense but I’d never heard that comparison before. I’m a scorpio, I totally see that influencing my personal work that is somewhat dark.
I keep multiple sketchbooks at a time. When I’m working on a project I tend to write a lot to hone in on my ideas and then I draw quite a bit to warm up and get out of my head.
