We first came across Polish illustrator, Paweł Mildner’s work in 2013 when we were struck by his wordless narratives and engaging characters.
Since then, his illustrations seem to have evolved greatly, turning into detailed images rich with even more depth in visuals, storytelling, and sophistication.
Compared to the work we featured a few years back, Paweł’s recent illustrations are much more layered now. This is not just in the literal sense of overlays and colours, but thematically, giving the impression of development in his artistic point of view too.
Below, Paweł catches us up on events in his life and work that have helped shaped the direction his art has taken.
While of course having a process that naturally evolves, he also mentions a shift in where he finds inspiration and a change of environment while also giving us a hint at a ‘spot the difference’ between his last studio shot and this one.
Since we last met, there have been two picture books that I’ve written & drawn. Lot more clients to work with. Much more confidence in what I’m doing, but I still try to experiment.
I have discovered that I love doing editorial work. Since last year, I also got into riso prints that I sell through my webshop. I even do some kind of illustration classes now so there are many new experiences. I’ve become a social media animal and a musical ignoramus.
I quit smoking and moved to a new flat, but as you can see my chair is still the same.
These days, much of my work has moved into a conceptual phase when I’m developing ideas in my head & sketchbook. But there is still the attention I used to give to the visual side.
My usual tools are pencils, felt-tip pens, a brush, a ruler and of course the computer but I tend to try new techniques so my cupboard is full of weird equipment. I work mainly in layers so I like to prepare much of it before I sit behind the computer.
On the other hand, I’ve recently apologised to my computer for calling him a coloring machine. My process got more digital, and my inspirations—less connected with the illustration world.
